More evidence of Victoria’s broken health system with revelations Latrobe Regional Health is being forced to pay $10,000 a day to anaesthetists.
Due to ongoing shortages, particularly in regional Victoria’s hospitals, anaesthetists are being paid well above the regular level of $2500-$3000 per day.
Shadow Minister for Health, Georgie Crozier, said the Allan Government’s lack of planning meant there was a shortage of qualified specialists who lived and worked where they were needed, rather than having to travel long distances at high expense for healthcare facilities and the Victorian taxpayer.
“Under Jacinta Allan, Victoria is broke because Labor can’t manage money and Victorians are paying the price,” Ms Crozier said.
“These payments are excessive at a time when other medical practitioners are being paid significantly less for doing the same work in other health services across Victoria.
“If Labor had properly managed the health system and recruited more specialists, we wouldn’t have such acute shortages and excessive payments being made to patch up their mismanagement.
“The Allan Government must apply proper scrutiny over how taxpayer money is spent and stop the waste and mismanagement which all Victorians ultimately pay for through higher taxes and reduced services.”
