Labuan Road spped limit lowered to 80km/h to improve safety

Aligned with the objectives of the Victorian Road Safety Strategy 2030, which aims to create safer rural roads for all users, the speed limit on Labuan Road will be lowered to 80km/h by Wednesday 18th October. The revised speed limit will be effective from Katamatite-Shepparton Road through to the Murray Valley Highway.

The implementation of the reduced speed limit is expected to contribute to a decrease in the frequency and severity of road crashes in the area.

Damien Burton, Moira Shire Council’s Acting Director of Infrastructure Services, emphasised that the speed limit reduction is only the initial step in improving safety for Labuan Road users. He stated, “We have further plans in place to enhance safety along Labuan Road and ensure the well-being of all road users.”

Expressing deep concern for the ongoing road safety issues within Moira Shire, Council’s Chair Administrator, John Tanner, highlighted the urgency for action. He said, “Moira Shire Council has monitored driver behavior on Labuan Road and other roads with evidence showing poor driver behavior that urgently needs attention.”

Tanner further added, “The frequency of fatal or serious injury incidents on our roads is alarming. We cannot stand idly by, and we are taking immediate measures to address this pressing issue.”

Tanner concluded, “The impact on our community is profound. We are committed to exploring all available options to effect positive change and position ourselves as leaders not only within our community but also nationwide.”

Concluding the announcement, Mr. Burton urged all road users to exercise caution and responsibility. He emphasised, “Every decision made on the road carries significant consequences, and it is essential for drivers to adjust their speed and behavior according to prevailing road conditions.”

The implementation of the reduced speed limit on Labuan Road underscores Moira Shire Council’s commitment to prioritising road safety and safeguarding the well-being of its residents and visitors.
