Lakeside Drive Upgrade Complete

The second and final stage of the Lakeside Drive Upgrade, from Stasinowsky Street to the Dripstone Road Roundabout, has been completed.

The two-stage major infrastructure project, valued at $3.9M, has been jointly funded by City of Darwin and the Australian Governments’ Roads to Recovery Program.

The 50 year old road has been upgraded in two stages to reduce the impact on road users as much as possible. Stage 1 was completed in March 2019.

The project has seen 1.3 km of road resurfacing, improvements to 7 pedestrian crossing points and upgrades to nearby pedestrian and bicycle paths. Major upgrades to the underlying stormwater systems were also completed during the road improvement, future proofing the road.

Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis said “City of Darwin maintains more than 450km of roadways across the city and Lakeside Drive is a Priority 1 Roadway; it takes a high volume of traffic and is a key route for for emergency vehicles.”

“Ongoing investment to maintain our roadways is critical to ensure all our roads meet the standards and expectations of all road users.”

City of Darwin have for the second time used recycled materials in the road projects, with the first at East Point Road. The 300 tonne of crushed concrete used at Lakeside Drive has been sourced from civil projects within the Darwin municipality.

“City of Darwin is taking a leadership role in creating a more sustainable city.”

“The focus in our management of waste and awarding of contracts is to support and encourage recycling and reusing; diverting material away from landfill and reducing our greenhouse gas emissions.”
