More affordable homes will be available for people in regional NSW thanks to a major new housing reform package from the NSW Nationals in government.
Nationals’ Minister for Lands and Water Kevin Anderson said the program will identify suitable Crown land across the state to rezone and activate for additional housing, starting with 615 hectares in North Tuncurry which will support 2,100 new homes.
“As more people choose to live, work and raise a family in the regions, it is important that our towns are able to grow in a sustainable way, which is why unlocking land supply is critical,” Mr Anderson said.
“This housing project in North Tuncurry will include a town centre plan for the area, a reconfigured golf course, community and cultural centres, a mobile surf club, nine parks and more than 300 hectares of protected area for environmental conservation.
“The NSW Nationals are putting regional people first by delivering up to eight Crown land sites, each to have an agreed amount of social and affordable housing, depending on the local needs and conditions.
“This program is being delivered in partnership with NSW Land and Housing Corporation (LAHC), Landcom and Aboriginal Land Councils. Through this partnership, we will work together to deliver homes where they are needed most and provide economic and cultural outcomes for our Aboriginal communities.”
Landcom CEO Alex Wendler said Landcom is committed to expanding into regional NSW and delivering quality affordable homes.
“This project represents an important step in our regional expansion and in providing long-term affordable housing solutions for people across our State,” Mr Wendler said.
Crown Lands has held discussions with the NSW Aboriginal Land Council and Forster Local Aboriginal Land Council to resolve an Aboriginal land claim to facilitate the North Tuncurry project.
Forster Local Aboriginal Land Council (LALC) Board Member Donna Hall said this announcement is another significant step forward for self-determination.
“As a community we have been partnering with Government to have the Land Agreement resolved, and the Forster LALC board is pleased the North Tuncurry negotiation has been finalised,” Ms Hall said.
“It’s an exciting time for Forster LALC as we look towards the next phase in empowering our people and bringing economic growth to our region.”
