ARCHBISHOP MAKARIOS OF AUSTRALIA,
AT SYDNEY INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (GATE A) 6:00 PM TONIGHT.
Archbishop Makarios is the first Archbishop in 44 years to assume the leadership of Australia’s 700,000 Greek Orthodox faithful.
He was elected unanimously by the Ecumenical Patriarchate of the Orthodox Church to succeed the late Archbishop Stylianos who passed away three months ago.
Having completed post-graduate studies at the Universities of Boston, Harvard and Monash, Archbishop Makarios received his doctorate at the School of Medicine of the University of Crete in bioethics. His dissertation was entitled “Cloning: Social, Ethical and Theological Components”.
Embracing his new home of Australia, Archbishop Makarios emphasized his desire not to exclude “the many Australian citizens who want to get to know the spirituality of Orthodoxy … I would like to make the Orthodox Church reach out to the Australian people”.
