Large-scale environmental mural getting underway in Moorabbin

Artist Mike Makatron and creative producer Leo Gester have been commissioned to create a large-scale environmental-themed mural at the Horscroft Place Pocket Park in Moorabbin.

Kingston Mayor Steve Staikos said that the site has recently undergone a major transformation to improve the streetscape and accessibility from Moorabbin station and the shops, through to Moorabbin Reserve and beyond to the Hospital and TAFE.

“With the assistance of the Victorian Government through the Suburban Parks Program, Council purchased 2 Horscroft Place in 2019 and demolished the old factory building, to connect it to the Healey Street Reserve and create a welcoming thoroughfare for football fans, students and community members to utilise,” said Cr Staikos.

The Horscroft Place Pocket Park now features accessible pathways, bespoke seating, newly planted shady trees, a lawn, bins, and drinking fountains. It is also home to a large-scale brick wall which is the site chosen for a new environmental-themed mural.

The artist commissioned to paint the mural, Mike Makatron, has more than 20 years’ experience working as an artist. He has travelled and created work around the world, from paintings on the Berlin Wall to the River Ganges. Locally, some of his recognisable works feature on the walls of Melbourne’s Myers Place and the Nicholson Street Reserve in Carlton, viewable from Alexandra Parade.

Leo is a creative producer and safety officer with 10 years of experience in managing cultural projects ranging from public art to large scale festivals.

Karkarook Ward Councillor Hadi Saab said that community members have been invited to provide feedback, to help guide the direction of the mural.

“Moorabbin has become a bit of a hub for the arts; it is home to Kingston Arts and boasts several public murals to enjoy. We invite community members to contribute their ideas to this latest significant piece that will become iconic to Moorabbin.”
