Largest Big Rivers School Gets Major Upgrades

NT Government

The Lawler Labor Government is preparing our students for the workforce of the future through advanced education facilities.

Through the Labor Government’s investment, the largest school in the Big Rivers Region, Katherine High School, is set to receive a state-of-the-art Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Maths (STEAM) centre within the next year.

The $16.7 million education facility is advancing strongly, with demolition of the first building 85% complete allowing for mechanical, electrical and plumbing works to get underway. This is expected to be complete in September 2024 before works commence on the second building.

Upgrades to the existing facilities and the construction of new developments will provide high quality educational infrastructure and include new modern and purpose-built classrooms, a new art studio and music studio with multiple rooms and a tiered performance space.

Local company, M+J Builders, is completing the project with up to 50 employees and subcontractors supported through the works, including 10 apprentices.

This multi-million dollar investment by the Lawler Labor Government will be the fifth STEAM facility to be built at Territory schools since 2016, a figure which is only set to increase following the landmark billion dollar agreement which sees all Territory Government schools fully funded.

The project is anticipated to be completed by mid-2025.

Quotes attributed to Chief Minister, Eva Lawler:

“Every child, no matter where they live, deserves a quality education, and the Lawler Labor Government will continue to deliver that following our landmark billion dollar agreement to fully fund all Territory schools.

“The Katherine STEAM centre will be at the forefront of training our future engineers, architects, tradies and more from the Big Rivers region, building the skilled workforce the Territory needs.

“STEAM centres offer multiple benefits, they are widely popular among students, meaning not only does attendance rise but engagement as well, leading to more opportunities for more students.

Quotes attributed to Minister for Education, Mark Monaghan:

“Education is the key to every child’s success, and the Lawler Labor Government is unlocking that success through state-of-the-art education facilities.

“The Katherine STEAM centre will be the fifth opened by the Labor Government since 2016 but certainly won’t be the last as only months ago we signed a landmark billion dollar deal changing the future of education in the Territory.
