City of Darwin’s CEO, Scott Waters, has today signed Council’s largest ever contract, valued at over $50M.
The contract will see international waste management company, Veolia, manage and operate the Shoal Bay Waste Management Facility (SBWMF) for seven years.
Major environmental and operational improvements are expected over the course of the contract, including increasing the diversion of waste material from landfill, commercial production of organic compost for local markets and cost minimisation through international best practice management.
Mr Waters said the contract was a clear demonstration of City of Darwin’s commitment to the climate emergency Lord Mayor Vatskalis declared earlier this year and will significantly reduce emissions produced by SBWMF.
“The awarding of this contract to Veolia, who are recognised as world leaders in waste management and environmental services, hails a new era in waste management in the greater Darwin region and highlights the importance Council is placing on reducing emissions.”
“By increasing diversionary activities at the site, Council is looking to promote efficiencies and encourage recycling and reuse of materials within our local economy.”
CEO & Managing Director of Veolia Australia & New Zealand, Mr Danny Conlon said the company was delighted to be supporting the City of Darwin in improving their environmental outcomes.

The contract to manage SBWMF will commence on 31 March, 2020, providing lead time for a smooth transition from the current to new facility manager.
