Tasmania Police is welcoming 74 new constables into its ranks today – the largest graduating class to date with 34 women, and 40 men.
After a widespread recruitment campaign, the constables started their course journey in January, going on to complete 31 weeks of intensive training.
Commissioner of Police Donna Adams said the course was critical to Tasmania Police achieving its goal of 150 recruits this year.
“Today is an historic day, with more police in Tasmania than ever before, and I am proud to be celebrating this record-breaking graduation,” she said.
“Congratulations to the 74 new constables joining our ranks today, you should be proud of what you have achieved already throughout your training, and for choosing a career with Tasmania Police,” Commissioner Adams said.
“Policing is one of the most important, rewarding, diverse, varied and challenging careers available, and we are looking forward to having our new constables deliver a high standard of policing services to Tasmanians from next week.”
“They will start in the job at various stations around Tasmania, with 32 new constables going to the greater Hobart area (including Glenorchy, Bellerive and Bridgewater), and 16 to Launceston.
“16 new officers are going to Burnie and 10 to Devonport, which is like the North West Coast getting its very own police recruit course – traditionally entire courses contain 24 recruits.”
“We’re continuing to strive to reach our recruiting targets well before expected, and we’re aiming to have another 160 recruits next year,” Commissioner Adams said.
Dux of the course has been awarded to Constable Imogen Bobrowski, while two Constables have taken out Runner-up Dux – Constable Janita Boud and Constable Benjamin Strong.
