Last chance to participate in the E-Scooter Shared Scheme Trial at Kogarah

Georges River Council

Georges River Council is reminding community members and visitors to try out e-scooters in Kogarah before the E-Scooter Shared Scheme Trial ends midnight on 10 January 2025.

Council proudly partnered with Transport for NSW and Beam to become the first Sydney Metro shared e-scooter trial that commenced on 10 January 2024.

Riders 16 years and older are able to hire a Beam e-scooter in Kogarah’s trial area in the town centre until the end of the trial. Locals and visitors are able to scoot to existing bus and train stations, St George Hospital, St George TAFE, Jubilee Stadium, community services and cafes.

As the trial comes to a close, Council would like to remind people who have become regular e-scooter users to plan for alternative transport from 11 January and to send in feedback through Council’s Your Say page.

The initial stage has proved popular with residents and visitors, with 2,023 rides in the first month, averaging more than one kilometre per ride.

The trial showed a total of 950 trips start at a station (Kogarah, Allawah, Carlton) and 561 trips end at a station.

The top five parking spots (highlighting the top destinations people travel to via e-scooter) in Kogarah:

  • Kogarah Station.

  • Kogarah Square.

  • Hospital – Gray Street.

  • Netstrata Jubilee Stadium.

  • Allawah Hotel.

The most popular routes include riding along Railway Parade near Kogarah Station, Jubilee Avenue, Gray Street, Belgrave Street and Kensington Street. Friday was the most popular day of the week for e-scooter rides.

From 10 January to 10 December, there have been a total of 10,278 trips with 8,930.63 kilometres travelled, and there were 3670 unique riders. The total ride time was 1282 hours and 28 minutes, with an average rider duration of 7.29 minutes.

After the trial, all results and feedback from Council’s Your Say consultation and Local Working Group stakeholders will be prepared into a report. It will be shared with Transport for NSW to inform the decision about what happens next for e-scooters in NSW.

Georges River Council Mayor, Elise Borg:

“Council would like to thank Transport for NSW, Beam and the entire Local Working Group for managing the trial making it the success that it is. We also thank all the community members and visitors who embraced and explored this new way of commuting to work, sporting games, and about local businesses.

“Over the course of the trial, we’ve seen thousands of people embrace e-scooters as a quick, affordable way to get around Kogarah, easing congestion and lowering emissions.

“Through the exploration and promotion of transformative transport solutions that capitalise on our strategic location, we are set to pave the path toward a vibrant, sustainable, and well-connected future by 2050.

“We will continue to work with Transport for NSW as it looks to increase micromobility across NSW in the future.”

Beam General Manager (ANZ) Tom Cooper:

“We thank Georges River Council for their trust in us to execute metro Sydney’s first 12-month e-scooter trial and are thrilled by the success of the trial and positive community response to this new mode of transportation in Sydney.

“Over the year in Kogarah, we’ve seen shared e-scooters support first mile and last mile transport, commutes to work, and local businesses in increased expenditure.

“As the trial nears its completion, we encourage all riders to ride safely over the busy holiday period and look forward to consulting further with Transport for New South Wales on the next steps for micromobility across the state.”

Community members and visitors who are riders or non-riders are still able to give feedback until the end of the trial through Council’s Your Say page.
