The rejuvenation of the Perth Cultural Centre (PCC) has marked a major milestone, with the appointment of the lead consultant COX Architecture.
The PCC precinct is set to undergo a $35 million revamp thanks to a $25 million State Government funding contribution and a $10 million Australian Government contribution as part of the $1.7 billion Perth City Deal.
COX Architecture – a design focused contemporary architectural practice with studios located in every major Australian city and a history spanning 60 years – has been awarded a $2.7 million contract to take the project to the next stage after the and were released earlier this year.
An overarching goal is to transform PCC into a connected, thriving and welcoming precinct for residents and tourists, connecting the major cultural and learning institutions in the area, which include the:
- Art Gallery of Western Australia;
- State Library of WA;
- WA Museum Boola Bardip;
- State Theatre WA;
- State Records Office of Western Australia;
- Perth Institute of Contemporary Art; and
- The Blue Room Theatre.
Planned development of the precinct involves a family-friendly approach with a new focal point, the creation of a new children’s play space, shaded areas, better lighting and security and accessibility.
Works will include the demolition of the amphitheatre and the demolition of the Art Gallery car park at the eastern end of the precinct, which will form better connections to Beaufort Street.
Overall the project will open up underused spaces and create a better environment for visitors. It will also lead to job creation and boost the local tourism and hospitality industries.
As stated by Culture and the Arts Minister David Templeman:
“I’m delighted to announce the appointment of COX Architecture as the lead consultant for the Perth Cultural Centre rejuvenation. It is a big step forward in this important infrastructure project to transform the precinct into a connected, thriving, and welcoming area.
“The PCC has the potential to be an iconic culture and arts hub. It has a prime location in the City of Perth next to a public transport interchange and is, of course, home to several major cultural institutions such as WA Museum Boola Bardip, Art Gallery of Western Australia, the State Library and the State Theatre Centre.
“The McGowan Government has a clear vision for the PCC to attract and retain visitors and meet the aspirations and expectations of Western Australians. I, like so many of you in the community, look forward to a safer, modernised precinct in the heart of the CBD and Northbridge.”
As stated by Perth MLA John Carey:
“This project is part of a much bigger transformation of our City, including the new ECU Campus, which is about attracting more people to the Perth CBD.
“I am excited about the future of this space, which will be transformed into an activated and attractive place to visit for families, tourists and locals.”
