The City of Stonnington is leading a co-council program to improve waste practices in multi-unit dwellings (MUDs) across ten metropolitan and regional councils in Victoria.
Of the 60 MUDs that were nominated to be part of the program, six of them are located within Stonnington.
The Best Waste Practices in Multi-Unit Dwellings program, funded by Sustainability Victoria’s Circular Economy Councils Fund, supports participating MUD waste champions and owner committees to divert waste from landfill through increased recycling rates and reduced contamination.
Waste and behaviour change consultants, Reground, were engaged to identify tailored best-practice waste management changes for each participating MUD. These changes included; installation of cardboard, clothing recycling bins and food and green waste bins and waste educational signage.
The program will also have a lasting impact, with the key findings being used to create a set of guidelines presenting the best waste practice in MUDs. The guidelines will be made available by the participating councils to the broader community to inspire better waste practices within their own MUDs.
With seventy per cent of homes in Stonnington being medium and high density and most Stonnington residents live in apartment buildings, this program can support a high proportion of our community to divert waste from landfill.
“Minimising waste to landfill and increasing recycling rates is a priority for us and our community,” Mayor, Cr Jami Klisaris said. “Stonnington is home to a number of multi-unit dwellings and providing those residents with the foundations for ongoing best waste practices will have a lasting impact.”
The other participating councils are the City of Darebin, City of Greater Geelong, City of Port Phillip, Maribyrnong City Council, City of Melbourne, Glen Eira City Council, Bayside City Council, Yarra City Council and Merri-Bek City Council.
