LGAT votes to support survivors of child sexual abuse

Elise Archer,Attorney-General

The Hodgman Liberal Government welcomes the unanimous decision by Tasmania’s local councils to join the ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾ Redress Scheme.

It is incumbent on all institutions to take responsibility for any child abuse that occurred within their organisations, and the decision by local government follows discussions between the State and local government sector.

It is important to send a clear message of support to Tasmanian survivors of institutional child sexual abuse, and the Government urges all relevant institutions who have not yet done so to formally join the scheme.

While institutions can never undo the suffering of survivors, their involvement in the ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾ Redress Scheme is an important step in acknowledging the wrongs that were done, as well as a means to provide survivors access to a sense of justice.

The Hodgman Liberal Government joined the ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾ Redress Scheme last year and committed $70 million towards the scheme. We will continue to do what we can to provide practical and meaningful assistance for Tasmanians to deal with the trauma associated with sexual abuse.
