Liberal Government upgrades Waymouth Street boarding house for people sleeping rough

The Liberal Government has completed $62,000 of maintenance and upgrade works to a rundown boarding house in Waymouth Street which will be used to help people sleeping rough transition to safe and secure accommodation.

The Waymouth St boarding house will be run under the guidance of the Adelaide Zero Project and be used for transitional accommodation for people who have been rough sleeping.

Places in the boarding house will be allocated to people on AZP’s “by-name list” and people will be assisted with specialist support services to help them stabilise their lives to be able to maintain secure housing.

Minister for Human Services Michelle Lensink said the people living at the boarding house will be given specialist assistance.

“In the past few months we’ve undertaken $62,000 of much needed, extensive maintenance and upgrade work to the previously rundown Waymouth Street boarding house,” said Minister Lensink.

“The boarding house will accommodate up to 18 people who have been rough sleeping, and with complex and high needs.

“Adelaide Zero Project partners will provide support services and case management for these clients, in order to create some stability in their lives and prepare them for future stable accommodation.”

The site had previously been used by another homeless service and the lease ended in October last year.

The procurement process is being finalised for a new service.

“This service will provide much needed transitional accommodation to the mix of services in the city helping some of the most vulnerable people in the community,” said Minister Lensink.

“The Liberal Government is committed to fixing the broken housing and homelessness system left by the former Labor Government.

“That is why we’re currently consulting on a new Housing and ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾lessness Strategy for South Australia, which will guide the state over the next decade and will be delivered by the end of the year.”

The lease for the Waymouth Street boarding house will be finalised soon, with it set to open later this year
