Liberals fail to tackle women’s jobs crisis

Tasmanian Labor
  • Unemployment rate for women has increased 50 per cent in Launceston and north-east
  • Jobless rate worst in the nation
  • Government in denial over jobs crisis
  • The Hodgman Liberal Government is failing to tackle a rapidly increasing jobless rate for women in Launceston and the north-east.

Shadow Minister for Economic Development, Jobs and ICT, Michelle O’Byrne, said jobs were being shed at an alarming rate, with women suffering severely under the Hodgman Liberal Government.

“The unemployment rate for women in Launceston and the north-east has increased by 50 per cent in the past year,” Ms O’Byrne said.

“The Premier promised before the last election to deliver the lowest jobless rate in the country.

“Despite Mr Hodgman’s frequent boasting, there are now less people in full time work than when he took office in 2014.

“One in fourteen women working full time last year no longer have their jobs.

“In the north and north-east, women have lost 1,874 jobs in the last year.

“Women in regional areas are among the worst affected by the Government’s inaction.

“In George Town, the jobless rate is higher than 10 per cent and women are among the worst impacted.

“The Premier must face the emerging jobs crisis and tell Tasmanians how he plans to turn his appalling job numbers around.”
