East Gippsland Shire Libraries has launched Storytime sessions and an After School Program at the newly re-opened East Bairnsdale Community Hub.

The initiative to deliver the programs out in the community focusses on introducing what the library offers to a broader audience in a convenient location.

Both programs are free and no bookings are needed.

The After School Program has been trialed in the latter part of Term 3.

Aimed at children aged 5 to 12, the After School Program includes reading books, a craft activity and games. It is timed to link in with school drop-off times.

Storytime is for younger children and is being held on the first Monday of the month. It is an opportunity for participants to socialise with other children and caregivers, and encourages children to develop a love of reading books.

Aimed at children aged two to five years and their caregivers, the sessions include stories, songs, rhymes, dancing and a craft activity.

Manager Community Engagement Sascha Johns said offering the program in the community hub makes sense.

“It gives us an opportunity to show what our library service offers and introduce people to our team, but in a place that’s familiar to participants,” Ms Johns said.

Libraries have changed a lot over the years and are now vibrant meeting places with paper-based and digital resources. We’re hoping this program encourages more families to come see what we offer.”

The East Bairnsdale Community Hub is at 24 Hoddinott Street, East Bairnsdale. Quantum Support Services operates the community hub and offers a number of programs.

The next After School Program will be on Thursday, September 12 from 3.45 – 4.45pm.

The next Storytime session will be on Monday, September 2 from 11am – 12pm.
