Commencing in January, our Term 1 Life Now Program will offer a combination of introductory online and face-to-face courses, including Exercise and Meditation. Courses are free of charge for people affected by cancer and their primary carers.
61-year-old cancer patient and recent Life Now Exercise participant, Helen Masters, said the Life Now Program helped her feel better, both mentally and physically.
“Spending time around others each week who understood what I was going through helped to motivate me and made me feel supported and that I wasn’t alone,” Ms Masters said.
“The classes also made me feel a lot stronger within my body – especially the boxing drills. I felt like they were setting me up for success.”
Diagnosed with breast cancer in 2019, Ms Masters underwent surgery, followed by radiation and chemotherapy treatment. Her exercise physiologist then recommended the our 12-week Life Now Exercise course to help with her rehabilitation.
“I was already receiving support from Cancer Council WA, including counselling and reflexology, so to be able to access free exercise classes too was a bonus. Thankfully I’m now in remission, but the regular exercise routine is something I have continued as part of a healthy lifestyle,” she said.
Life Now’s introductory style courses, including yoga, meditation, exercise, tai chi, and mindfulness are specifically designed for cancer patients and their carers, offering participants the chance to learn techniques to support their physical and mental well-being during treatment and recovery.
Our Life Now Coordinator, Ryoka Elton, said she is always delighted to hear such positive feedback from participants. “We know through numerous studies that there are a range of benefits from attending classes such as exercise, meditation, mindfulness, yoga and tai chi, including reducing anxiety and stress, but it’s wonderful to hear first-hand from people like Helen, just how Life Now courses have improved their lives,” Ms Elton said.
Life Now is made possible thanks to generous community donations. All courses are delivered by experienced facilitators in a safe and supportive environment. Please note some eligibility criteria apply to participate.
