The Year 1 Phonics Check 2024 results show that the Tasmanian Government’s commitment to lift literacy outcomes for all students is making a positive difference.
The number of students meeting or exceeding expected phonics achievements in Tasmanian Government Schools has increased by 5 percentage points this year.
Minister for Education, Jo Palmer, said the data shows that what we’re doing is working.
“Our Government is so proud of our Year 1’s and the progress they’ve made this year – we’re on the right trajectory,” Minister Palmer said.
“In the schools where our teachers are delivering structured literacy, we are seeing unbelievable levels of improvement.
“Schools are turning their results around and we want to encourage our schools to stay on the journey.
“We are making transformational change in our schools through our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future.”
The Year 1 Phonics Check was delivered to eligible students in all Tasmanian Government, independent and Catholic schools with primary school students in 2024, in line with the Government’s Lifting Literacy commitments.
A key component of our Lifting Literacy plan in 2024 has been the introduction of system-wide structured, explicit phonics instruction in all Government primary school classrooms.
Our Government is delivering evidence based structured literacy in 25 per cent of all Government primary schools in 2024, increasing to 100 per cent by 2026.
From 2025, all primary school teachers will deliver a minimum of 60 minutes structured literacy instruction every day.
