A $5.67 million redevelopment of Broken Hill’s Line of Lode Reserve has commenced to boost the appeal of the landmark as a tourist attraction for the Silver City.
Crown Lands is overseeing the project that will include:
- Redesigning, expanding and refurbishing the Broken Earth Complex including installation of a full-scale commercial kitchen, new amenities and extra storage to provide improved café and restaurant facilities and support functions and conferences.
- Landscaping of the reserve to improve its visual appeal and provide an improved sense of arrival for visitors, while complementing its buildings.
- Construction of a reticulated water system to ensure safe and secure water supply to the reserve and its facilities, servicing its kitchen, on-site water tanks, toilet amenities, and watering the grounds.
Minister for Lands and Water Kevin Anderson said the Line of Lode is a unique Crown land reserve that provides an incredible backdrop and tourist lookout for Broken Hill, while paying tribute to over 800 people who had lost their lives to mining since the 1880s.
“This $5.67 million upgrade aims to support regional jobs and material suppliers to inject money into the economy while breathing new life into the reserve for the benefit of locals and visitors to Broken Hill.”
Minister for Western NSW Dugald Saunders said a boost to the tourism industry in Broken Hill as significant as this will have a lasting impact on the town’s economy after a difficult few years.
“People and businesses in regional NSW, particularly in iconic places like Broken Hill, have suffered immensely as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic,” Mr Saunders said.
“Through investments like these, the NSW Government is helping to keep people employed, keep the local economy ticking along and has provided travellers with yet another reason to visit Broken Hill.
“With domestic and international borders reopening, it is critical for Western NSW to re-establish itself as a tourist hotspot, and this investment will play a crucial role in that.”
The NSW Government has contracted North Construction and Building Pty Ltd to manage the upgrade project following a tender process.
Upgrade work is scheduled to be finished by the end of June, and follows previous improvements to the reserve including installation of solar panels and lighting, fencing, bitumen paving, CCTV security, and signage to promote the reserve.
