Liverpool residents unanimously say NO to supporting 30km/h in CBD

Over 90 per cent of Liverpool residents recently said in a community consultation, that they do not support the 30km/h speed camera to remain in the Liverpool CBD. The consultation surveyed close to 2,000 residents and was conducted by Liverpool City Council.

Bigge Street in Liverpool has been revealed by Channel 9 as one of the top earning speed cameras in Sydney. The speed camera in a 30 km/hr zone has raised a total of $2.58 million in fines in the first seven months of this year.

Mayor Ned Mannoun said that the main feedback received from the Liverpool community to describe the trial was “ridiculous, dangerous, revenue raising and unfair.”

“We received over 400 responses within a matter of hours of putting up the survey. The volume of responses we received broke all previous records on our website and demonstrates the strong feelings out there held by the community,” said Mayor Mannoun.

Over 82 per cent of survey respondents are LGA residents, with the remaining being made up of students, business owners, people that work in the area and from neighbouring Councils that visit Liverpool regularly.

“It’s time for the NSW Government to hear from Liverpool. The people that live and work in this area on a day-to-day basis and listen to how this trial affects them. Local motorists are reporting receiving abuse for adhering to the 30km/h limits and it’s causing more harm than good. We need change and we need it now,” Mr Mannoun said.

Results from the consultation also revealed that over 90 per cent of residents would feel safer walking and 93 percent would feel safe while driving, if the speed limit was increased to 40km/h.

Mayor Mannoun thanked the Liverpool community for voicing their thoughts and taking the time to participate in the consultation.

“The results are overwhelmingly clear and proves that it is time for this trial to come to an end in the Liverpool CBD. It’s only fair that NSW Government and Transport for NSW take this into consideration when making decisions for our residents,” Mr Mannoun concluded.

Further Community Consultation comments included:

“I feel 40 km/hr is perfectly fine and safe for cars and pedestrians, I feel 30 is way to slow and distracting to keep watching the speedometer, while driving to stay on 30.”

“Stop these stupid 30km zones – they are a hassle to navigate during any busy time, as well as making our trips to work and home both a lot slower and more stressful having to keep monitoring our speed.

At 30km is unsafe as I always have to check meter to make sure I’m going the limit no one else really goes the limit anyways I’m always getting beep at every time I drive though Liverpool”
