Premier Mark McGowan and Albany MLA Peter Watson were on hand today to turn the sod, marking the start of construction upgrades to the Albany Secondary Education Support Centre and North Albany Senior High School.
Local Albany company Wauters Enterprises has been awarded the construction contract for refurbishments, supporting local jobs.
The project involves refurbishing and reconfiguring eight classrooms previously used by North Albany Senior High School into high-quality specialist facilities, catering for students with disabilities at Albany Secondary Education Support Centre.
It also includes a new double-storey classroom block for North Albany Senior High School to replace the classrooms handed over to the education support centre.
The classroom block will provide six general learning areas, a computer laboratory, staff planning rooms and toilets for staff and students. The current science block will also be extended to provide two new state-of-the-art science laboratories.
The McGowan Government is investing $452.8 million in 2019-20 to improve infrastructure in Western Australian public schools and to create jobs.
This is on top of the recently announced $200 million maintenance package announced for all 789 public schools that will help stimulate the local economy and create more than 3,150 local jobs.
As stated by Premier Mark McGowan:
“I visited North Albany Senior High School and Albany Secondary Education Support Centre recently to discuss our new multimillion dollar maintenance package – it’s a pleasure to be back today to turn the sod on almost $10 million worth of upgrades.
“All students deserve to learn in modern accessible facilities regardless of where they live.
“That’s why we have allocated more than $450 million in the 2019-20 State Budget to upgrade school infrastructure and a further $200 million for maintenance upgrades.
“We are making sure students have quality learning facilities, while stimulating the local economy and creating and supporting local jobs.”
As stated by Education and Training Minister Sue Ellery:
“It’s fantastic that we can provide state-of-the-art facilities for students all around the State.
“Students at the Albany Secondary Education Support Centre have specific and special education needs, so it’s important that they have the best possible learning environment so they can thrive at school.
“Students and staff at North Albany Senior High School will benefit from a modern new classroom block and science area.”
