Councils across the Territory will share in a funding pool of around $4 million to deliver key strategic infrastructure projects, and support community development.
The Territory Labor Government’s Local Government Immediate Priority Grants (IPG) also fund plant and equipment, repairs and maintenance, road upgrades, and support animal management projects.
New plant and equipment is bound for Minjilang, Palumpa, Peppimenarti, and the Central Desert Regional Council; abandoned vehicles will be removed in Wadeye; and staff housing improvements will be made in Bulman, Galiwinku, Milingimbi and Ramingining.
Grants provided to the City of Darwin and the Barkly Regional Council will be used for animal management programs; and several councils will now be able to carry out upgrades to roads and other infrastructure, as well as recreational and sporting facilities.
The annual grants round offers local government councils the opportunity to:
deliver key strategic infrastructure projects;improve community infrastructure and delivery outcomes;assist with immediate repairs and maintenance requirements on capital assets or fast track shovel-ready infrastructure projects; andimprove the quality and safety of community assets and infrastructure.
Quotes attributable to the Minister for Local Government Chansey Paech:
“The scope for local government councils to deliver essential infrastructure and support animal management across the Territory will be boosted by these grants.
“Regional and remote councils with lower rate bases will benefit the most from these grants.
“By increasing the capacity and sustainability of local governing bodies, we are extending opportunities for job creation which is a priority for the Territory Labor Government.”
