A submission to the Local Government Rating System Review has been approved by Campaspe Shire Council.
Mayor, Cr Adrian Weston said the review was initiated by the Minister for Local Government to examine the current application of rates and charges by all Victorian municipalities.
“The Rating System Review provides a great opportunity to look at the system to ensure it remains simple, efficient and equitable for all,” Cr Weston said.
The raising and collection of rates is essential to the ongoing ability of local government to provide the necessary services and infrastructure to meet the needs of the community.
“Whilst rates provide a source of revenue to Council, it only accounts for 45 per cent of total revenue. The rest is obtained through grants and user fees and charges,” Cr Weston said.
A discussion paper has been released providing an overview of the current system and asks a range of questions of both councils and individuals.
“The review is open for community comment through to 1 November and we encourage residents to provide their comment on the future model via the Victorian Government website,” Cr Weston said.
A copy of this discussion paper and online survey can be found at . The website also provides an easy to understand two and a half minute video clip on how rates work.
Council’s submission is available on its website.
