Ararat Rural City Council has congratulated two local residents who received Queen’s Birthday Honours this week.
Karen McIntyre from Lake Bolac and Leo Watkins both received a Medal (OAM) in the General Division for services to their respective communities.
Mayor Cr Peter Beales said it was wonderful to see Ms McIntyre’s and Mr Watkins’ volunteer and community work acknowledged with such a high honour.
Ms McIntyre founded the Lake Bolac Development Association nearly 20 years ago and has been heavily involved with the town’s information and business centre as president for nearly as long.
Mr Watkins has been heavily involved in the Stawell Ararat Cross Country Club for more than 30 years, holding office bearer positions over the years. He has also been involved with the Aradale, Warrak Hall and Ararat Show Society committees, as well as being a member of the CFA.
“We appreciate the commitment these two worthy recipients have contributed to our community over many years, and we congratulate them for their OAMs,” Cr Beales said.
“Ararat Rural City Council is proud of all its volunteers and those who give to our community so freely, and we recognise the wonderful achievement of receiving a Queen’s Birthday Honour at this time of year. Congratulations to Ms McIntyre and Mr Watkins.”
The Order of Australia is the principal means of recognising outstanding members of the community at a national level. Anyone can nominate a member of the community for recognition through the Order.
The Order of Australia was established in 1975 by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Prior to 1975 Australians were recognised under the British honours system, also known as Imperial awards.
