Local Seniors are invited to ‘Get Into It’ this October

Kingston Seniors Festival returns for its twelfth year this October.

This year’s festival theme is ‘Get Into It’ and will feature a month-long program of free and low-cost events and activities for seniors.

Kingston Mayor Georgina Oxley said that this year’s program includes more than 100 activities and workshops which provide opportunities for older people to leave the house, pick up a new skill, have fun and meet others.

“From the Seniors Fit Club and author talks to tips on de-cluttering, this festival caters to all levels of mobility, and will provide enriching experiences and opportunities to develop new friendships,” said Cr Oxley.

Activities include, but is not limited to:

  • Preserving family photographs, free workshop at Parkdale Library, Tuesday 1 October, 2–3pm
  • Stardust/The Mission, a Kingston Arts performance about two Australian family histories, Shirley Burke Theatre, Tuesday 1 October, 7.30–9.30pm. Tickets $35, phone 9556 4440.
  • Lux Radio Theatre’s Sherlock Holmes and A Woman’s Wit with the Mighty Wurlitzer, Kingston City Hall, Thursday 3 October, 1–3pm. Tickets $20, phone 9556 4440.
  • Nutrition for Seniors, free information session at Clarinda Library, Thursday 3 October, 2–3pm.
  • Seniors Fit Club, Waves Leisure Centre, Chesterville Road Highett, every Monday from 7 October, 11.30am–12.30pm. (Free, bookings essential, phone 9559 7111)
  • Gardens of the ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾ Trust of Victoria, free talk with garden historian and author Dr Anne Vale, Westall Library, Tuesday 15 October, 2–3pm
  • The Cascades Female Factory in early colonial Hobart, a free event about the true stories of female convicts in Van Dieman’s Land. Parkdale Library, Tuesday 15 October, 2–3pm
  • A free live performance of wartime songs through to 80’s hits from Cindy Dean at Parkdale Library on Friday 18 October, 1.30–2.30pm. (Bookings essential, phone 1300 135 66)

The festival is also proud to provide information sessions and tips to empower our Senior Citizens, through events such as Third Age Decluttering, Spark Up Your Brain and iPads, Tablets and More: Interactive Session with Lunch.

“These are just a few of the many informative sessions which are aimed at empowering older residents,” said Cr Oxley.
