More than $600,000 in Victorian Government funding will be shared among a number of local sporting clubs to build vital infrastructure.
Council’s application for funding under the government’s 2020-21 Local Sports Infrastructure Fund for three local projects have all been approved.
Its received confirmation of $325,000 towards construction of a multipurpose pavilion at Kiewa, $250,000 for the Beechworth Tennis Courts project and $30,000 towards a feasibility study for a new swimming pool in Beechworth.
Mayor Jenny O’Connor said it was more important than ever for local communities to be focussed on health and well-being and all of these projects will go a long way towards increasing participation in sports and ensuring that all shire residents have access to quality facilities.
“The new pavilion at Kiewa, which is long overdue, will be of particular benefit to local women, who will have appropriate change facilities and I congratulate the Kiewa Memorial Park Committee of Management, the Kiewa Cricket Club and Kiewa Tennis Club for their tireless work in making this project a priority.” Cr O’Connor said.
President of the Kiewa Cricket Club, Graeme Edwards has thanked council and the state government for the funding, as well as committee members for their work in preparing the grant application.
The tennis club project, valued at more than $1M will see the construction of four new Tennis Victoria compliant cushioned acrylic courts at the Baarmutha Park site. The works will also include new fencing, LED lighting, parking, entry paving and improved drainage.
The funding for the Beechworth swimming pool feasibility study will be matched by council and is one of the key priorities of the recently adopted Pools Development Plan.
Cr O’Connor said the project is to develop, present and prepare a feasibility study on future options for the pool, including replacement of pool structures at the existing site, a new outdoor facility at the existing or alternative site or a new indoor pool facility at existing or alternative site.
