Hamilton singer Tom Barras and local band Traffik will support Melbourne band The Velvet Cub at an all-ages music extravaganza at Hamilton Performing Arts Centre this Friday night (November 24).
The local young musicians were selected alongside other home-grown acts to perform at the FreeZa event being organised by ‘Jam’, a group of young music enthusiasts.
Southern Grampians Shire Council’s Youth Engagement Officer Emily Anderson, who facilitates ‘Jam’, said a lot of work had gone into organising the major event, so she encouraged the local community to get behind it.
“A recent youth survey by council told us that local young people wanted to see more live music events,” said Ms Anderson. “We’ve since had the pleasure of helping to support the formation of the Jam and empower these young people to plan and deliver events in our shire.”
Ms Anderson said singer/guitarist Tom Barras developed his passion for music at Baimbridge College and was inspired by the likes of Queen and Foo Fighters.
She added that Traffik cleverly mixed punk and alternative styles with glam and Aussie rock and would be covering some of their favourite artists.
“They’re all pumped about this unique opportunity to express themselves as musicians and experience all the excitement that comes with being in front of a live audience,” she said.
“We have a great balance of genres on offer by all acts this Friday night, so we encourage the entire community to come along to this all-ages event. There’s going to be lots of fun and great energy.”
Forming in 2018 in Melbourne, The Velvet Club is a five-piece indie rock band that has taken their emphatic live show from backyard gigs to playing support for the likes of Great Gable, Eskimo Joe, Dulcie, Pacific Avenue and Death by Denim.

This event is alcohol, drug and smoke/vape free. No pass outs. Chaperones must accompany under 16s. The show starts at 6.30pm.
