Logan City Council celebrated its commitment to a unified future at a special ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾ Reconciliation event this morning.

A Welcome to Country, traditional dances, bush tucker and weaving were part of the launch of Council’s Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) 2019-2020 at Logan Brothers Rugby League Club in Logan Central.

Logan City Council Community Services Director Katie Barton-Harvey said Council’s plan included practical actions to guide practices across Council and in the community.

“It will allow Council to continue building its capacity to support and sustain reconciliation outcomes across the city,”

Ms Barton-Harvey said.

“This is a great body of work which we are proud to celebrate.

“One eye-catching element of the new RAP is the inclusion of striking images created by three local artists.

“Casey Coolwell, Jessica McKinnon (Muralappi) and Sylvia Nakachi were commissioned to produce designs for the RAP document which visually demonstrated the concept of reconciliation.

“We are extremely proud of their work and I encourage the community to take the time to read the stories behind their works included in the RAP document.”

Ms Barton-Harvey said Council was proud of the progress made from the launch of its first RAP in 2015.

“We have been able to build stronger relationships, respect and opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities,” she said.

“We look forward to continuing this journey with the second RAP.

“We are keen to share our knowledge with other councils and we welcome feedback on how we can continue to improve.”

Reconciliation Australia Chief Executive Officer Karen Mundine commended Logan City Council on its new RAP.

“We will be following Council on its ongoing reconciliation journey,” Ms Mundine said.

“RAP organisations across Australia are turning good intentions into positive actions, helping to build higher trust, lower prejudice and increase pride in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures.

“We wish Logan City Council well as it embeds and expands its own unique approach to reconciliation.

“We encourage the Council to embrace this journey with open hearts and minds to grow from the challenges and to build on its successes.”

Today’s unveiling was a free, family-friendly event designed to allow the community to learn about its shared histories, cultures and achievements.
