Logan libraries mark historic moon landing

The City of Logan will celebrate the first moon landing in the city’s libraries.

For anyone born after July 20, 1969, mankind has always walked on the moon.

But for those who watched the historic landing on what was then black-and-white TVs only in Australia, it is an occasion indelibly stamped on their memory.

On July 20 it will be 50 years since American Neil Armstrong took his “one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind” onto the moon’s surface from the Apollo 11 Lunar Module Eagle, piloted by Buzz Aldrin.

The anniversary will be celebrated throughout Australia and around the world.

The City of Logan will hold its celebration of the first moon landing at two libraries.

The celebrations include a display at Logan North Library which features a rocket that has made 13 successful launches from Logan since 2009 and has broken the sound barrier.

The display includes other space items provided by Ari Piirainen from the Queensland Rocketry Society Inc including an autographed photograph of Buzz Aldrin.

An afternoon of lunar-crafting activities will be held on Saturday, July 20 from 1.30pm to 2.30pm at Logan West Library at Browns Plains and from 2pm to 3pm at Logan North Library at Underwood.

Galactic mobile workshops will be held at all nine Logan libraries for the remainder of the school holidays.

Bookings for the activity sessions and workshops can be made at loganlibraries.org/whats-on

While Armstrong, and later Aldrin, walked on the moon, Michael Collins flew the Columbia Command Module alone in lunar orbit.

The trio returned to Earth, splashing down in the Pacific Ocean, on July 24 with 21.5 kg of lunar soil and rock.

As the astronauts were landing on the moon in 1969 momentous occasions in the City of Logan included:

* The estate of Springwood was placed on the market by developers Intercapital Investments Ltd and Cambridge Credit.

* Woodridge North State School opened

* St Paul’s Catholic School at Woodridge opened

* Trinder Park home for the aged opened

* Kingston State School relocated to Juers Rd
