Logan City Council’s innovative biosolids gasification project at Loganholme has won a prestigious national award.

The facility, the first of its kind in Australia, converts human waste into environmentally-friendly biochar.

It was named Australia’s premier Infrastructure Project Innovation (Metro) at the Ozwater’23 national awards in Sydney last night.

The awards are part of the annual Ozwater conference and exhibition, which is the largest water industry event in the southern hemisphere.

City of Logan Mayor Darren Power commended Logan Water on the national accolade.

“Our gasification facility, which is also attracting international interest, is innovative technology that not only safeguards our environment, but also represents a major cost saving for ratepayers,” Cr Power said.

“Congratulations to everyone at Logan Water as this recognises the significant advances they have made in recent years for Council and our city.”

Infrastructure Chair Councillor Teresa Lane said Logan Water’s award-winning efforts were helping the city cope with a massive growth spurt with new residents and businesses flocking to Logan at record levels.

“Every day, the Logan Water team rises to the challenge of providing sustainable water and wastewater infrastructure for our rapidly growing community,” Cr Lane said.

“It is fantastic to see their outstanding efforts to support and bolster our community recognised at a national level.”

The national recognition follows an Infrastructure Project Innovation Award the facility won at the Queensland Water Awards in October 2022.

Logan Water’s biosolids gasification facility opened in April 2022.

The project received funding from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA).
