Looking for young leaders to make a difference

Young Canberrans aged 12 to 25 with a broad range of knowledge, skills, background, gender, experience, ability and education are encouraged to apply for a position on the ACT Youth Advisory Council.

The ACT Youth Advisory Council raises awareness of the needs, concerns and aspirations of young people in Canberra, and facilitates interaction between young people, the ACT Government and the broader community.

The Council provides an opportunity to take a leading role on topical issues. Members are currently working on:

  • Equity for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people;
  • Civic Participation;
  • Environment and Sustainability; and
  • Health and Wellbeing.

We would love to hear from young people who can provide the ACT Government with direct and well informed advice on matters relating to young people, and ensure that the diversity of young people’s experiences and circumstances is reflected in advice to government.

As noted by Isaac Martin, Co-Chair, Youth Advisory Council:

“The Youth Advisory Council talks to the government about what young people want. We’re lucky in the ACT, the government actually really does care about young people and what we want to see in Canberra.

“We run events, hold consultations and find out what the community wants. We then take that feedback to the government. Applications are now open for young people who want to get involved. I really recommend it if you want to see change in the community and feel like you are a part of that real change.”

As noted by Shaylah McClymont, Youth Advisory Council member:

“The Youth Advisory Council is young people who all want to make a difference in our community. It’s a great way to have your say on government matters and what happens for young people in Canberra.”

The term of Youth Advisory Council members is two years from appointment. Expressions of interest close on Monday 6 May 2019. For details, contact Youth InterACT on 6205 3064 or download an application at
