- Goldfields Women’s Refuge in Kalgoorlie receives $450,000 Lotterywest grant
- Refuge provides crisis accommodation and support services for women and children
- Funding will help support an additional crisis accommodation facility
The Goldfields Women’s Refuge in Kalgoorlie has today received a Lotterywest grant of $450,000.
The refuge provides crisis accommodation and support services to help reduce disadvantage for women and children in the Goldfields.
The Lotterywest grant will support additional temporary accommodation in the form of townhouses, which will double the capacity of the refuge up to 72 beds and provide independence and security for the women and children accessing the refuge.
The existing accommodation will continue to provide support for shorter-term crisis accommodation.
The McGowan Government continues to make addressing family and domestic violence a priority, with a record investment of an additional $160 million since coming into Government.
As stated by Prevention of Family and Domestic Violence Minister Sabine Winton:
“Family and domestic violence is never acceptable, but we know it is a significant issue across Western Australia.
“Sadly, access to safe accommodation can be a major barrier for people escaping family violence.
“Doubling the capacity of the refuge is an important step in supporting more victim-survivors to take that first step and seek help.”
As stated by Kalgoorlie MLA Ali Kent:
“Our region relies on the wonderful work of the Goldfields Women’s Refuge to support women and children escaping family violence and provide crisis accommodation.
“This funding is amazing. The additional accommodation is critical for us and I’m so proud to be part of a Government that prioritises preventing family and domestic violence in our community and keeping families safe.”
