A man will appear in court today charged as part of an ongoing investigation into the theft of high-performance and luxury vehicles across Sydney’s east.
About 4.40am yesterday (Wednesday 5 August 2020), officers from Eastern Beaches Police Area Command responded to reports of a break-in at a home on Battery Street, Clovelly.
Police were told a group of five unknown people had entered the property, stole car keys and a handbag, before stealing a Mercedes Benz A250 and a Porsche Macan.
The matter was referred to specialist investigators from Redfern Region Enforcement Squad (RES), who commenced inquiries under Strike Force United.
About 6.20pm, Redfern RES investigators attempted to stop the Mercedes on Henry Street, Randwick.
It’s alleged the driver rammed the Mercedes into a police vehicle, before three passengers exited and fled the scene on foot.
Despite an extensive search of the area, they were not located.
The 22-year-old male driver was arrested at the scene and during a subsequent search of the man and the vehicle, investigators seized a bag, mobile phone and documents.
During the arrest, a male Sergeant sustained injuries to his hand. He was treated at the scene by paramedics.
The South Coogee man was taken to Maroubra Police Station and charged with aggravated break and enter commit serious indictable offence, two counts of take and drive conveyance without consent of owner, enter vehicle without consent of owner, drive reckless/furiously or speed manner dangerous, resist officer in execution of duty, never licenced person drive vehicle on road and use offensive weapon in company to prevent detention.
He was refused bail to appear before Waverley Local Court today (Thursday 6 August 2020).
Following further inquiries, the Porsche Macan was located parked on Burragulung Street, Randwick.
Both vehicles have been seized to undergo forensic examination.
Investigations by Redfern RES are continuing.
