Bell Shakespeare returns to Mildura Arts Centre (MAC) next month with a modern adaptation of Shakespeare’s timeless comedy classic Much Ado About Nothing as part of its 2019 national tour.

Much Ado About Nothing is one of Shakespeare’s contemporary comedies where romance is thwarted by ‘dastardly plots, misinformation, false accusations, broken promises and bumbling cops’, and will be performed at MAC for one night only on Wednesday 21 August.

Directed by James Evans of Julius Caesar-fame, Much Ado About Nothing stars Zindzi Okenyo (Antony and Cleopatra) as Beatrice, with Duncan Ragg as Benedick. They will be joined on stage by Vivienne Awosoga, Danny Ball, Marissa Bennett, Mandy Bishop, Will McDonald, Suzanne Pereira, Paul Reichstein and David Whitney.

After directing Bell Shakespeare’s national tour of Julius Caesar in 2018, James Evans is thrilled to steer the 2019 tour, encompassing Mildura.

“Much Ado About Nothing is the original ‘from hate to love’ romantic comedy that we’ve seen repeated in films and plays since Shakespeare’s time,” Mr Evans said.

“But beneath its sparkling wit and hilarious characters, there is a dark conflict that drives this play to the edge of tragedy.”

Councillor for Arts and Culture Jason Modica said Bell Shakespeare were no stranger to Mildura audiences.

“It’s exciting to welcome Bell Shakespeare back to our region following their previous amazing performances at the Mildura Arts Centre,” Cr Modica said.

“This performance is a must-see for both residents with a love of Shakespeare, who will be intrigued by the modern adaptation of this classic play, and our community more broadly, as Bell Shakespeare do a fantastic job of making Much Ado About Nothing very accessible for those simply looking for a great night of entertainment.”
