An exciting occasion was marked at the December Council Meeting when Councillors agreed to issue Development Consent for a new multi-purpose pavilion at the Verge and Eden Street Sporting Complex.
The new building will not only serve as a modern, well-equipped clubhouse for local sporting clubs but will also help to bring a higher level of sporting events and matches to the Macleay Valley.
Residents will have noticed new fencing around the netball courts on Belgrave Street. The taller fencing is a welcome sight when compared to the previous ageing fencing. Amongst its many benefits, perhaps the most exciting will be fewer netballs, if any, will bounce over onto the busy street during games.
An automatic irrigation system is also in use at the complex that will help keep the playing fields in top-notch condition, particularly in bouts of hot and dry weather.
New additions and improvements Gladstone and Smithtown
Enjoying a day out on or along the banks of the Macleay River is even better with two key projects winding up into the New Year.
The historic Gladstone Hall which has been part of the community since 1898 is just about finished with its external refurbishment.
The project includes:
- Repairing the external timber cladding, roof and decking
- Installing new and improved steps and ramps
- Repainting the entire hall using the colour palette provided by Council’s Heritage Advisor.
The hall is looking schmick and unblemished while also keeping its historical and original charm for years to come.
Across the Macleay River at Smithtown, a fresh toilet block has a new home in Nestle Park.
Joining a playground and barbecue area, the accessible toilet block makes Nestle Park an inviting and enjoyable outing by the river.
This project came after Smithtown residents expressed the need for a family-friendly and modern toilet block for this growing community park at a Council Community Catch-up.
