Macquarie appoints Evie Bruce as Group General Counsel

Macquarie Group (“Macquarie”) today announced the appointment of Evie Bruce as its next Group General Counsel and Head of the Legal and Governance group, effective May 2022, following the planned retirement of Michael Herring, who has served in the role since 2009.

Ms Bruce, currently Australian Managing Partner for King & Wood Mallesons, Australia’s (KWM) Mergers & Acquisitions and Banking & Finance practice teams, will join Macquarie in January 2022 and work alongside Mr Herring and his leadership team for an extended handover period. As head of KWM’s financial services sector team, Ms Bruce leads the law firm’s extensive engagement with Macquarie’s businesses globally.

Mr Herring joined Macquarie in 2005 and went on to lead Macquarie Capital’s Financial Institutions Group. He was appointed Group General Counsel in 2009 and leads a team of 400 lawyers and governance professionals supporting Macquarie’s activities in over 30 markets.

Macquarie Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Shemara Wikramanayake, said: “I’m delighted to welcome Evie to Macquarie, having had the pleasure of working closely together over many years. Evie’s broad transactions experience across a range of relevant sectors, as well as her proven leadership and development of a large global group of lawyers at KWM, will be a significant asset to Macquarie in the years ahead. I would also like to thank Michael for the commitment and deep expertise he has demonstrated throughout a long and successful career with Macquarie.”

Ms Bruce, who will be based in Sydney, will join Macquarie’s Executive Committee, effective 6 May 2022, on taking over as Group General Counsel.
