The Barnarwatha Recreation Reserve will get two new multi-purpose hard courts, suitable for netball and tennis following the latest round of funding under the Victorian Government’s Local Sports Infrastructure Fund.
Funding of almost $492,000 has been announced for the project, with Indigo Shire Council to contribute just under $241,000 towards the redeveloped courts.
The project will also include installation of new LED lighting, two player shelters, a four-tiered spectator seating stand, new fencing, improved storm water drainage, footpaths and site remediation.
Rutherglen youngsters will also benefit from the latest funding round, with a major redevelopment of the existing skate park, valued at more than $274,000. The State will contribute $181,443 towards the project and Council will tip in $93,470.
The upgraded skate park will involve a tripling of the size of the existing facility and a number of new features will be added, providing a range of opportunities for people of all ages and abilities.
Council will also be able to commence master planning for several outdoor spaces and parks, with funding of $30,000 to be matched by its own contribution of $40,000.
The plans will prepare for the future activation and development of the Allans Flat water hole, Rutherglen’s Barkly Park, Coulston Park in Tangambalanga and the Yackandandah Sports Park.
Mayor Bernard Gaffney says the funding, totaling more than $700,000, together with Counci’s contribution, will see more than $1M invested into important local facilities that will have wide ranging benefits for community members of all ages.
“We’ve worked closely with the relevant organising committees, and in the case of the skate park, with Rutherglen young people, to submit strong funding applications for each of these projects and we are thrilled that they have been successful,” Cr Gaffney said.
