A new boardwalk with viewing platforms will be built at Tacking Point Lighthouse, creating an accessible, modern addition to one of Port Macquarie’s iconic landmarks.
Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional NSW Paul Toole said a $750,000 grant from Round Two of the NSW Government’s Regional Tourism Activation Fund, along with an additional $300,000 contribution from Port Macquarie-Hastings Council, will create a space for everyone to take in the breathtaking Port Macquarie coastline.
“Tacking Point Lighthouse has helped ships safely navigate since 1879 and boasts some of the best views the region has to offer,” Mr Toole said.
“This major redevelopment will mean people of all ages and abilities can access the headland and take in the view.”
Port Macquarie-Hastings Mayor and ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾s’ candidate for Port Macquarie Peta Pinson said the upgrades will provide a welcome addition to an already very popular part of Port Macquarie.
“This will be an incredibly rewarding project for our community as we look to further enhance accessibility and grow visitation to this iconic location,” Cr Pinson said.
“While a date for construction has not yet been decided, I look forward to seeing this project come to fruition as we progress further into 2023.
“Community consultation undertaken last year drew a varied and passionate response from the community, who shared their experience and their sense of connection with this iconic place. The process also raised awareness of the challenges facing those living with a disability and of their desire for inclusion and accessibility to be at the fore of developments in our region.”
In addition to making the boardwalk accessible, the design aims to minimise visual impact on the lighthouse, use robust materials, reduce environmental impact and appeal to visitors.
The Regional Tourism Activation Fund aims to support projects that are accessible and inclusive for everyone and ensure all visitors to regional NSW have unforgettable experiences that encourage repeat visitation.
The $180 million Regional Tourism Activation Fund is part of the NSW Government’s $3.3 billion Regional Growth Fund, designed to support growing regional centres, activate local economies and improve services and community infrastructure for regional communities.
