Major works are now complete on the Waurn Ponds Station upgrade. Commissioning and critical safety testing will take place in 2022 to enable additional services for this part of the Geelong Line.
Works on the transformed station entrance are complete, with the new forecourt, drop-off zone, bike storage, and upgraded car parking spaces to open to the public after final safety inspections early this year. These upgrades will provide passengers more options on how to access the station.
The pedestrian overpass, ramps, stairs and lifts, as well as the second platform and track, will be operational after commissioning this year.
During the commissioning period the remaining 50m section of the duplicated track will be installed, following the relocation of a live signalling box from the rail corridor.
More than 2000 sleepers and 2.9km of new rail have been laid at the station. Construction of the second track is the first step in track duplication between South Geelong and Waurn Ponds, which will allow more services to run to the growth areas of Marshall and Waurn Ponds.
The Waurn Ponds Station upgrade, Waurn Ponds stabling and the South Geelong to Waurn Ponds Duplication are part of the Australian and Victorian governments’ investment of more than $4 billion in the Regional Rail Revival program, which is upgrading every passenger rail line in the state and creating 3000 jobs.
