from The Australia Institute shows that more than two thirds of South Australian voters (69%) want to see the state transition to 100% renewable energy by the year 2030.
A majority of voters for all parties listed, including the Coalition and One Nation, support the policy.
“Renewable energy is extraordinarily popular in South Australia,” said Noah Schultz-Byard, The Australia Institute’s SA projects manager.
“The majority support for 100% renewable energy in SA cuts across party lines, with Coalition, Labor, Greens and One Nation voters all backing the policy.”
South Australia’s Energy Minister Dan van Holst Pellekaan has that the state is on track to meet the previous government’s target of 75% renewable energy by 2025.
“Our state is already leading the way on renewable energy and now we know South Australians want to keep that trend going into the future,” said Mr Schultz-Byard.
“The school students who went on strike recently were demanding 100% renewables by 2030. It seems those children are actually more in touch with public opinion than the politicians who lined up to criticise them.
“While a rapid transition to renewable energy would certainly help to tackle global warming, it would also bring much needed jobs in construction and maintenance to our regions, helping to reduce unemployment.
“It’s important for our political leaders to understand that, with the next Federal Election just a handful of weeks away, South Australians have said in no uncertain terms that they support 100% renewable energy.”
