Man arrested and charged with dangerous driving and assault police, Maryborough area

Maryborough detectives have charged a 34-year-old Monto man with 13 offences including dangerous driving and serious assault police following investigations into several alleged offences including the attempted theft of a truck from Apple Tree Creek and biting of a police officer last night (September 27).

It will be alleged Childers police were searching for a blue dual cab utility, which had earlier evaded them after they had attempted to intercept it due to the manner of driving, when police received information from the public that a man armed with a metal pole was attempting to break into a prime mover in Sanctuary Court at around 9.30pm.

Police attended and located the man in the cabin of the truck. When he spotted the officers, he exited the truck and re-entered the dual cab. He was aggressive and struggled with police as they tried to arrest and remove him from the vehicle, biting one officer and causing a minor laceration to her arm.

Both officers deployed their tasers however they were ineffective. The man reversed into the parked marked police vehicle, hitting the same officer in the arm, before speeding off. She sustained no further injury and the police vehicle sustained minor damage to the front passenger side mirror.

Police then received multiple calls from the public regarding the manner of driving and movements of the dual cab as it travelled south along the Bruce Highway.

Police pursued the vehicle, which failed to stop. It sustained damage to its wheels/tyres and came to a stop in Aldershot at around 11.55pm where the man was arrested and taken into custody. He was denied police bail and is due to appear in the Maryborough Magistrates Court tomorrow, September 29, charged with two counts each of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, and serious assault police, and one count each of attempted unlawful use of a motor vehicle, unlawful possession of a knife, unlawful possession of explosives (ammunition), evade police, fail to provide a specimen of saliva or blood for testing, contravene a police direction. As well as three counts of unlicensed driving.
