A man has been arrested for aggravated robbery which has left a deli owner in hospital with serious head injuries.
Police will allege, just before 1.30pm on Friday 28 December, a man armed with a knife and a hammer, jumped the counter of a deli on Fairfield Road assaulting the deli owner by striking over the head with the hammer, before stealing cash, cigarettes and a mobile phone.
Northern District police patrols quickly converged on the area, setting up cordons in the vicinity, locating and arresting the alleged suspect.
Meanwhile, the injured 49-year-old man was taken to the Lyell McEwen Hospital with a serious head injury, believed to be a fractured skull.
A 25-year-old man from no fixed place has been charged with aggravated robbery and aggravated assault cause harm.
He has been refused police bail and expected to appear in the Elizabeth Magistrates Court on Monday 31 December.
