A man wielding a baseball bat has been arrested following an attempt car jacking and assault at Elizabeth South early this morning.
Just before 4am on Thursday 8 November, a man was driving his Commodore wagon, when he stopped at the traffic lights at intersection of Philip Highway and Hogarth Road.
As he stopped at the lights, he was approached by a man swinging a baseball bat who smashed his driver’s side window. The armed man then opened the driver’s door demanding the car and striking the motorists in the right arm.
The victim quickly drove off and called the police.
Northern District patrol were quick to respond and located the armed man still near the intersection. As patrols approached, he attempted to hit the police vehicle with the bat, but they reversed out of the way.
When further patrols arrived the armed man dropped the wooden bat and ran off.
A short foot pursuit ended with the man being detained and arrested.
The 29-year-old man form Elizabeth South has been charged with attempt aggravated robbery and aggravated assault cause harm.
The motorist, a 36-year-old man was taken to the Lyell McEwin Hospital for x-rays to his arm. The Commodore wagon will also be forensic examined.
The arrested man will be refused police bail and appear in the Elizabeth Magistrates Court later today.
No police vehicles were damaged in the incident.
