Man charged after officers allegedly assaulted at Wollongong shopping precinct, NSW

A man has been charged after two police officers were allegedly assaulted at Wollongong this morning.

About 10.45am today (Monday 28 January 2019), officers attached to Wollongong Police Transport Command issued a 25-year-old man with a move-on direction in a shopping precinct on Crown Street, Wollongong, before he left the area.

Less than an hour later, about 11.10am, two male senior constables from Wollongong Police Area Command were conducting patrols of the area and noticed the same man in the precinct allegedly acting aggressively toward security guards.

Police will allege the man became aggressive towards the officers, before one was head-butted and one was punched in the face multiple times.

OC spray was deployed by police before the Wollongong man was arrested.

The male senior constables, aged 27 and 33, received minor injuries to their face, arms, and legs, and were treated at Wollongong Police Station by NSW Ambulance paramedics.

The 25-year-old man was taken to Wollongong Police Station, where he was charged with destroy or damage property, continue intoxicated etc behaviour after move on direction, assault police officer in execution of duty (x2), and resist or hinder police officer in execution of duty (x2).

He was refused bail to appear at Wollongong Local Court tomorrow (Tuesday 29 January 2019).
