Man charged with alleged carjacking and assaulting police – Armidale

A man will appear before a New England court today charged with allegedly stealing cars, assaulting police and damaging property across north west New South Wales.

On Sunday 17 November 2024, officers attached to New England Police District commenced an investigation following reports of multiple car thefts between Nambucca Heads and Armidale.

Following investigations, about 11:15am yesterday (Monday 18 November 2024), police located a 27-year-old man on Niagara Street, Armidale.

When officers attempted to arrest the man, he allegedly fled from the scene.

A short time later, the man was found at a home on Brogan Street.

When officers attempted to arrest the man, he allegedly ran from the property via a window.

About 12.00am today (Tuesday 19 November 2024), police were called to the same Brogan Street property following reports the man was there.

Police attended and while arresting the man he allegedly assaulted an officer before being taken to Armidale Police Station.

The man was charged with:

  • · Three counts of take and drive conveyance without consent of owner:
  • · Three counts of destroy or damage property:
  • · Two counts of hinder or resist police officer in the execution of duty;
  • · Assault police officer in execution of duty cause actual bodily harm;
  • · Assault with intent to take/drive motor vehicle, dishonestly obtain property by deception;
  • · Negligent driving;
  • · Not give particulars to injured person;
  • · Drive recklessly/furiously or speed/manner dangerous;
  • · Enter dwelling with intent to steal;
  • · Enter inclosed land not prescribed premises without lawful excuse;
  • · Never licensed person drive vehicle on road.

The 27-year-old was refused bail to appear before Armidale Local Court today.

Police will allege in court the man was involved in a crash on Waterfall Way, Armidale, in a stolen Toyota Camry. Police will also allege in the court, following the crash, the man stole a utility that had stopped to assist following the crash.
