A man has been extradited to NSW following an alleged carjacking and pursuit in the state’s north at the weekend.
About 2pm on Saturday (2 October 2021), a 25-year-old man was seated inside a BMW sedan on Dawson Street, Lismore, when an unknown man opened the car door and allegedly assaulted him, before taking the vehicle and fleeing the scene.
The man was uninjured and alerted a passing police vehicle, with officers commencing patrols of the area.
Officers from Traffic & Highway Patrol Command subsequently observed the BMW travelling north on Wilson Street.
They attempted to stop the vehicle, however, the driver allegedly accelerated from the scene.
About 3pm, the BMW was again sighted travelling west along the Tweed Valley Way at Murwillumbah, when officers activated warning lights and sirens.
When the driver failed to stop as directed, police initiated a pursuit, with the vehicle allegedly reaching speeds of approximately 200km/h in a sign-posted 100km/h zone.
The pursuit was terminated a short time later due to the manner of driving.
The vehicle then crossed the border into Queensland at the M1 Motorway, before the BMW was involved in a collision at Reedy Creek.
The driver – a 30-year-old man from Urraween in QLD – was arrested by Queensland Police (QPOL) a short time later and taken to Southport Police Station, where he was remanded in custody.
Yesterday (Tuesday 5 October 2021), detectives from Richmond Police District attended Southport Courthouse where they applied for, and were granted, the man’s extradition to NSW.
Earlier today (Wednesday 6 October 2021), he was escorted to Tweed Heads Police Station and charged with assault with intent to take/drive motor vehicle, police pursuit – not stop – drive dangerously, drive recklessly/furiously or speed/manner dangerous and drive motor vehicle during disqualification period.
He appeared at Tweed Heads Local Court today, where he was formally refused bail to reappear at the same court on Wednesday 24 November 2021.
