Man extradited to Tasmania to face child sexual abuse charges

Detectives from Hobart have arrested a 74-year-old man in the Australian Capital Territory and extradited him to Tasmania over historical child sexual abuse charges.

The charges relate to crimes allegedly committed in the 1980s when the man was a Tasmanian resident.

Detective Inspector Michael Smith said the investigation has been complex and protracted, with the complaint arising from the public exposure of victim-survivor accounts during the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse.

“This investigation is one of many historical sexual assault investigations undertaken by Tasmania Police where adult survivors of child sexual abuse come forward to report their experiences,” he said.

“The community can be assured Tasmania Police is committed to providing ongoing support to victim-survivors of sexual abuse and is dedicated to bringing offenders to justice”.

The man is expected to appear in an out of hours court session in Hobart tonight, on the charge of persistent sexual abuse of a child.
