Police are urging motorcycle riders to obey the road rules after a man was intercepted in Queenstown on Saturday night, allegedly riding an unregistered and uninsured trail bike on a public street while under the influence of alcohol, not wearing a helmet, and without a motorbike licence.
“Around 7.35pm on Saturday, police intercepted a 35-year-old man allegedly riding an unregistered and uninsured trail bike on Peters Street. At the time he was not wearing a helmet, and he does not have a motorcycle endorsement on his driver licence,” said Acting Inspector Martin Parker.
“The man was transported to Queenstown Police Station for a breath analysis where he returned a positive result.”
The man was charged with:
- Person mentioned in section 6 (3) of the Road Safety (Alcohol & Drugs) Act 1970
- Use unregistered motor vehicle
- Using a motor vehicle with no premium cover
- Rode motor bike or quad bike when not wearing helmet
- Drive whilst not the holder of a driver licence.
He was bailed to appear in the Queenstown Magistrates Court on 14 April 2025.
“Riding an unregistered trail bike on a on public streets without a licence, while not wearing a helmet and being under the influence of alcohol could have had a devastating outcome,” Acting Inspector Parker said.
“This man was lucky to have not killed or seriously injured himself or someone else in a crash.”
“If you’re riding a motorcycle, always obey all road rules, to help us keep everyone safe.”
