- Event will form part of Paris 2024 Paralympic Games qualification
- McGowan Government proud to showcase WA’s inclusive and welcoming facilities
Badminton fans will be wowed with drop shots, serves and shuttlecocks aplenty as Western Australia hosts the 2023 Para Badminton International for the first time ever this October.
Sport and Recreation Minister David Templeman today announced the event would be held at the Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre from Monday 2 October to Friday 6 October.
More than 200 of the world’s best players from India, China, Malaysia, Canada, Denmark, Indonesia, and more will compete across six different classifications, including wheelchair, standing lower, standing upper and short stature.
Para badminton is now recognised as a Paralympic sport, debuting at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.
The Para Badminton International will form part of the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games qualification, where athletes gain points towards the Paralympic Ranking List.
The event is being managed by the Badminton Association of WA, working closely with the local disability sector. The Association delivers para badminton programs for people living with a disability to play on both a social and competitive basis.
In the past two years the McGowan Government has provided more than $187,000 in funding to the Association – through the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries’ grant programs.

As stated by Sport and Recreation Minister David Templeman:
“It is wonderful news that my home city, Mandurah, has been chosen to host the 2023 Para Badminton International.
“Para badminton is a fast-growing, and safe sport for people with disability. This event will showcase some of the best players in the world and show what is possible at an elite level.
“The McGowan Government strongly believes in sport for all. Everyone has the right to be a part of an inclusive and welcoming sporting community. The Badminton Association of WA currently has three national players – I’d love to see this event encourage more people to give this sport a go.”
