Seven Marine Rangers from remote communities will soon be patrolling Top End waters after completing a Certificate III in Fisheries Compliance.

Last week candidates from the Bawinanga, Bulgul and Yirralka Rangers came together in Nhulunbuy to complete their final module.

The course, which is facilitated and supported by NT Fisheries, Charles Darwin University and the NT Water Police, provides a pathway for rangers to learn and engage in fisheries management. Each of these graduates can also apply to be appointed as a Class 1 Fisheries Inspector.

While completing the final module, students headed out on patrols with the water police to further develop practical compliance skills, engaged with commercial and recreational fishers and completed a tour of a commercial Barramundi vessel and interactions with local anglers.

Over the past 15 years, 232 rangers have completed accredited fisheries compliance training with 32 of those graduating with a certificate III.

The next group of students will begin their block of training at Batchelor in September.

Quotes Attributable to Minister for Agribusiness and Fisheries, Paul Kirby:

“These graduates will bolster our Marine Ranger resources to engage with and enforce compliance among our commercial and recreational fishos, and pave the way for more students to get involved.

“On-country learning is an important component of training, but putting the theory into practice and promoting engagement between rangers and recreational and commercial fishers is a significant one.”
